Under the Volcano

Volcano 1A few blocks from Rice Village you’ll find this dimly lit, tiki-inspired bar that has been a neighborhood staple for years.

Like many establishments in Houston, Under the Volcano takes advantage of the city’s temperate climate and has two excellent covered patios, one of which you can rent for private parties. And yes – these patios make for an excellent daytime drinking spot on weekends. But the fun doesn’t stop once the sun goes down here. By 9 p.m. this place is usually pretty crowded. You’ll want to get here early if you want a spot in the gravel parking lot out front.

This place is also a lively spot during the week, attracting everyone from locals to professionals enjoying drinks after work to Rice students out for some fun. All drinks that don’t come in a bottle (bottled beer/wine) are $1 off during Happy Hour, which runs from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. We recommend the frozen screwdriver – it’s the best in town. They also have a kitchen with a full menu to feed your belly while you’re there. We were fans of the Mediterranean Plate, which came with hummus, tapenade, caponata and pita chips.
