Valhalla (Rice’s Grad Student Pub)

Valhalla-1Nestled under Rice University’s chemistry lecture hall and behind an entrance that resembles a hobbit’s home, you’ll find Valhalla, Rice’s grad student pub. With a mix of bottled and draft beers, you’ll be sure to find the classics as well as some lesser-known brews rotating through. Whatever it is you decide on, make sure you tip your bartender! The friendly all-volunteer staff of grad students and alumni have been serving for over 40 years for tips alone. How else would they be able to regularly serve some draft beers as low as 95 cents (sometimes even as low as 50 cents)?

However, it’s not the drinks that frequently lands Valhalla on Houston Press’s “Best of” list. The indoor and outdoor scenery provide the perfect after-work atmosphere no matter what you’re in the mood for. The inside is like hanging out in a friend’s basement with old photographs and memorabilia lining the walls, while the outside puts you in the middle of the beautiful arboretum that is Rice’s campus.

Adding to Valhalla’s charm, you can expect to meet some quirky people and overhear plenty of bizarre conversations between them. On a nice day, you’ll see patrons playing bocce ball, volleyball, and throwing a Frisbee around (just be careful not to get in anyone’s way if they’re playing beer golf). You don’t have to be a Rice student or alum to enter. If you love beer, you’ll fit in just fine.Valhalla-2 Valhalla-3 Valhalla-4 Valhalla-5 Valhalla-6 Valhalla-7 Valhalla-8 Valhalla-9Insider’s Guide

• The founders of the St. Arnold Brewing Company went to Rice, so whenever they put out their next Divine Reserve, you can be sure that Valhalla will get first dibs on a keg.
• If you are on campus around sunset, head over to the Turrell Skyspace in front of the Shepherd School of Music to view the “Twilight Epiphany” in all its glory.
