At first sight, Happy Fatz looks just like a house, which, to us, has become a telltale sign of a hidden Houston gem. Both the building and parking are a bit small but this plays into what makes this locale so cozy.
The first thing that struck us when we walked in was how incredibly clean and organized it is. The menu above the register is written on chalkboards where you can browse the unique variety of hot dogs and choose one that suits you, such as the best-selling “Clucker.” This delicious dog is topped with grilled onions, bacon, a heap of hash browns and a fried egg over easy ‑- and let’s not forgets the special Clucker sauce.
Happy Fatz also has breakfast items, desserts and a large variety of drinks for you to try. Devon, the smiling barista who was running the floor, is more than willing to concoct you a delicious beverage of choice. Whether it’s tea, coffee or Italian soda, he genuinely enjoys mixing it up.
Once we had all ordered, we sat down and enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. Adding to the cool vibe, the walls are adorned with art from local artists, which the restaurant owners encourage, free of charge. If you want a patio feel, outdoor seating is also available.
To our pleasure, long-time dessert chef and co-owner, Rebecca, came by to check on us and have a friendly chat. Devon also came by to check on us and share some smiles and conversation.
We learned from them that Happy Fatz is a place for the community to just sit down and relax. Families and friends come here, pets included, to have a good time.
• The menu was refined by testing it at tailgates of Texans games. That’s some delicious research!
• On the second Wednesday of every month, bring your family for open mic karaoke night.
• Seriously, try some of the coffee and Italian sodas. Devon is quite the mixologist – and he has a great smile!
• Dog friendly
