Houston is known as a hot and humid slab of concrete and pavement. However, there are places in the city that offer a relief from the heaviness of city life. Located just inside the 610 West Loop near the Galleria area, Memorial Park is a 1,466 acre piece of land that offers Houstonians many outdoor amenities such as softball fields, volleyball courts, running/walking trails, a fitness center, a swimming pool and even an 18-hole golf course.
Like many places in Houston, the park itself has a rich history. From 1917-1923, the land on which the park is currently located was known as Camp Logan, a World War I US Army training camp. After World War I, the area became known as “Memorial Park” as it was dedicated to the memory of soldiers who lost their lives during the war.
The lush lawns and abundant greenery are a welcome relief to Houstonians who are looking for a place to enjoy nature without driving outside the city limits. The running trail is a favorite of many Houstonians and is always full of runners, joggers and walkers, especially during after-work hours. The “picnic” loop is the perfect place for road cyclists, as it is closed to automobile traffic during weekdays.
Memorial Park is the perfect place to “get away from the city” without actually getting away from the city. Houston’s “work hard, play hard” personality is on full display everyday as people come and enjoy all that the park has to offer. Insider’s Guide
